Mini Collegium

February 16-17, 2002

For those who are unable to travel to the Estrella War, the Canton of Mons Draconis will be hosting a mini-collegium at the home of Lord Carolus and Lady Christine. The schedule and a list of courses are below. For directions, or to inquire about limited crash space, contact Lord Carolus von Eulenhorst.

We are requiring that any minors be accompanied by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). As usual, we will be having hands on classes using various tools and these need the responsible adult present. Thank you all for your understanding.

We still have class times available if anyone wishes to teach a class. This is a great time to try out that new class you have been working on but aren't sure it's ready. If you wish more information or want to place your class on the schedule please contact Lord Carolus.

There will be a pot luck feast after classes on Saturday evening. After dinner, there may be an informal "play, request or pass" bardic hosted by Clann Fhaoilcheire.

If you are planning on attending, please fill in the registration form at the bottom of the page. A current registration count is available; instructors are not counted for their own classes.

COURSE LIST

ARCHERY
Making Bamboo Arrows Bamboo arrows are steeped in history just as ancient as other wood arrows. A bamboo arrow of your own crafting can be just as accurate as one purchased from a professional fletcher but will have infinitely more value and charm to the archer. Students of this class will construct their own bamboo arrow; choosing the raw shaft, preparing the shaft, cutting the nock, fastening fletching, and mounting the tip. Student should bring their bow, if possible, so nocks may be fitted properly. And, of course, to shoot the finished arrow. This is not a class for children as open flame and various sharp tools will be in use.
Instructor: Lord Taillear Glas naLamh Chli
SAT 9 - 11 AM
Making a Crossbow Each student will make a target crossbow from scratch during the day. The materials fee covers all materials and parts. Pre-registration required, MAX 5 students, contact Carolus von Eulenhorst.
Instructor: Lord Carolus von Eulenhorst
SUN 9 AM - 6 PM
Fee $45
Making a Flemish Twist Bowstring Students of this class will learn the secret art of crafting a Flemish bowstring. Flemish strings are more beautiful and quieter than the endless loop strings commonly purchased in archery shops. They also fit into the SCA's period whereas the endless loop string is decidedly modern. Additionally, students will learn a very special manner of tying off serving. The $5 material fee requested covers a string jig that the student will take home. If more students sign up than there are jigs available then no fee will be charged to those who do not receive a jig. While jigs are not necessary for Flemish string construction they do make it much easier to measure and cut the strings. Students are requested to bring their bows so the strings may be made to the proper length.
Instructor: Lord Taillear Glas naLamh Chli
SAT 11 AM - 1 PM
Fee $5

Introduction to Poetry for the Non-Poet

I long to tell the things I know, the tales
Of wars long past and heroes bold, and yet
When pen seeks paper then my vision fails.
The story crawls away and I forget.

Do you have ideas for poems crawling around in the dark corners of your mind, but are not certain how to get those ideas out on paper, much less in a period structure? This class seeks to provide a basic poetic vocabulary as well as an introduction to the craft of poetry and certain period forms. The goal is for students to leave the class with a better sense of how to drag those ideas kicking and screaming onto the page. No really, it's fun, I promise!

Instructor: Lady Mary Dedwydd verch Gwallter

How to Get the Most out of Wars: A seminar for Fighters Going to war is, indeed, different for combatants! As a fighter (of any style) you subject yourself to different (though not more) stresses than non-combatants. This seminar/discussion will address the issues surrounding how to make your first war (or your first in a while) more enjoyable, by helping you to recognize and reduce the stress. Discussions on breaking in armor, being truly prepared to camp, and taking care of yourself while having a great time will be facilitated by the instructor. Experienced war fighters (of all weapon styles) are encouraged to come and share their experiences and suggestions so that you (and your Lady or Lord) will want to come to a second war!
Instructor: Lord Seosaidh MacFaoilcheire
